It has been nearly two and a half years since we took over Dalton Bicycles and renamed it Bear Creek Bikes. I have been so pleased to see Dalton’s cycling community embrace the shop and see cycling in Dalton continue to grow. In the mission statement I wrote before ever opening the shop, I said that I wanted our shop to be “the Hub for the Dalton cycling community” and I continue to work towards that goal.

One of my favorite times at the shop is when it is full of people talking, hanging out, bench racing, and just generally enjoying each others company and our common passion for cycling and life in general. For that reason we are wanting to celebrate the Holiday Season with all of our friends and riding buddies so on Dec 5th come in and spend some time hanging out with friends and talking about past and future rides.

We will also be having a swap meet here at the shop that will give you a chance to liquidate some of that old or unused cycling gear and turn it into CASH $$$$ or to pick something up at a great price. We will be setting up cars in the back and you can sell out of your trunk like Big D’s flee market only for cool cycling and outdoors gear. Bring your stuff and let’s do some trad’in...

If you have questions contact Shane at Bear Creek Bikes in one of the following ways

p: 706.260.2733
shane@bearcreekbikes.com

Visit us on the web at:
www.bearcreekbikes.com

Hey folks,
Pull up a chair and lets have a heart to heart. I am so pleased to see the turn out of our weekly group rides, with many rides topping more than 30 riders. I am so proud to watch this large group of cyclists leave the shop every week, and yet, every time we roll out I have a sense of fear or impending dread when I come back into the shop. I just hope, PRAY, that there is no drama out on course, or worse, that no one is hurt. I know that people in the community are watching us, we have even made the forum a few times, and we are rarely painted in a positive light. So here is what I am planning to do:

Saturday, May 30th, 9am- Bear Creek will be having a cycling and the law seminar here at the shop. I have already booked Charlie Smitherman, a lawyer and Iran man distance Tri athlete to speak with us about our rights and responsibilities as cyclists. I am also trying to get a representative from the Dalton Police Department here as well.

In the mean time here are some things I feel we need to work on:
1. We need to realize that people are watching and just do the right thing. What is the right thing, you know what it is, if it means stopping at a stop sign when cars are waiting, STOP! You know what the right thing is, we are all big kids here, just do the right thing.

2. Look out for one another. Our groups are large most nights, please, please, please take care of your fellow cyclists. We are stronger and safer in numbers and everyone enjoys the ride more when riding with someone (usually). I challenge all of you to ride with someone different in your next 3 rides. We are a clique-y bunch. Get to know some of your fellow riders, we have a lot of interesting people that ride out of the shop.

3. Stack the odds in your favor. We all should really ride with headlights and tail lights. I admit I don't most times but given the time when we arrive back to the shop, our perchance for trying to get every mile out of the ride as possible in our given daylight. We should all do this...it is simple, and greatly increases our visibility to TEXTING motorists.

4. Ride some different courses. I want to make this clear, this shop IS NOT LOCKED in on the route we always ride. In fact, I WOULD LOVE TO have ride leaders that are willing to try something different! Really I WOULD! If you decide to do a different route all I ask is that you announce it and then make sure you describe it adequately. If you say 30 miles at 16mph then lets keep it close to that. By varying our courses, this also relieves some of the pressure on the more heavily traveled roads where the tension sometimes builds. Most notably, Waring Rd.

5. Feel free to make suggestions, but feel free to step up. I crave feedback and want to do my absolute best to improve the rides here at the shop. But I am only one person and I normally ride with the slowest group. I need people that are willing to help usher the group along. Educate new cyclists in the way we do things here. We have many new riders that want to learn, but no one is helping them along. I CHALLENGE THE VETERANS to step up and help improve the safety of our group by helping educate these new riders. Communication is key and it keeps bodies off the tarmac, there is no question about that. Please be a positive force on the road and above all else, be safe and enjoy the ride.

Thanks
shane
